In the summer of 175, false word reached the eastern legions that Marcus Aurelius had died fighting the Marcomanni on the Danube. Avidius Cassius, governor of Syria, took the report at face value and had himself declared emperor. Egypt, Syria and much of the Roman east recognised him inside weeks.
Marcus was alive, encamped hundreds of miles away with an army he still needed for the actual war. He did not break camp.
He finished the campaign season first.
Cassius’s own officers killed him before the two armies ever met. Marcus had the killers punished rather than rewarded, and burned his rival’s private correspondence unread, so no other name in the east would be dragged into a purge he had not ordered.1
None of that first part was a choice Marcus was given. A province decided who its emperor was without asking him.
What stayed his, the whole time, was the second decision: what to do with the fact once it reached him.
Marcus’s own name for that second decision is the inner citadel, the fortress no siege can take because it is the one property a person never actually holds jointly with the world. A province, a supply chain, a market you sell into: all of it is rented from circumstances that can change the terms without notice. The citadel is the part of the arrangement that stays yours regardless.

Indonesia’s trade ministry retired its three-year-old e-commerce rulebook that day and replaced it with Permendag 19/2026. The new rule tightens what a cross-border seller must show to list on Shopee, TikTok Shop or Lazada: a local legal entity or registered representative, product listings in Bahasa Indonesia, and a minimum free-on-board value of US$100 on anything shipped in from abroad.
Nine days later Jakarta’s Ministry of MSMEs finished the sentence. Platforms agreed to cut commission fees by at least fifty percent, but only for sellers verified through the government’s own Sapa UMKM portal as Indonesian-registered and selling goods made in Indonesia. A seller shipping in from Yiwu or Guangzhou does not qualify, however many units move.
The paperwork got slower on the same clock.
Since the start of the year the review cycle for a foreign seller’s documents has stretched from three working days to roughly fifteen. More of those reviews now end in rejection.
Jakarta has been open about the worry sitting under all of it. Proposals for tariffs as high as 200 percent on imported apparel, footwear and textiles, aimed squarely at low-cost goods from China, have been on the table since well before this year’s rule changes landed.

The number that is actually yours is the landed cost calculated on the assumption the fifty percent never reaches your account. Run it this week, before the next inventory order goes in, not after the next headline. If registering a local entity would genuinely move your catalogue into the domestic tier, price the incorporation cost against twelve months of the discount you would otherwise never see, and decide against that number rather than against the news story.
If it does not clear, the honest move is repricing the SKUs that were only surviving on a margin the ministry just voted away from you, not waiting for the rule to soften.
Cassius’s soldiers killed him before Marcus arrived, which cost Marcus the one thing he actually wanted from the whole affair: the chance to pardon a friend in person. He made his peace with an empire that had split without asking him. He never made peace with losing the decision that was genuinely his to make.
