IBM released Granite Time Series PatchTST-FM-r2 on September 9, a zero-shot forecaster for demand, prices, energy loads and traffic. It ranks first among replicable zero-shot models carrying permissive licences on GIFT-Eval, and needs no fine-tuning.
Positive-sum angle: Zero-shot means the forecast arrives before the data science hire does. Every distributor, clinic and bus operator sitting on years of unread spreadsheets gains the planning floor that large firms used to buy, and the install is the whole procurement process.
What's the impact: A Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City operator can forecast next quarter's demand this week off existing sales history. The localised wrapper, one that reads a Xero or Accurate export and hands back a reorder date, does not exist yet.
