A market empties in Jakarta; the buyers are all on camera.

Empty kiosks · weak peso · live selling

Someone's payday
- Rp10 million a day became Rp1 million: 26 kiosks are dark at Pasar Pondok Labu — Liputan6
Helmy Samsuddin sold Rp10 million of stoves a day at Pasar Pondok Labu in 2005. He now takes Rp1 to Rp2 million; 26 kiosks have shut and the first floor runs at a fifth of capacity.
Positive-sum angle: The demand did not vanish, it changed address. Every rupiah that left the kiosk now clears through a phone, and the operators who hold stock, film, pack and deliver for traders like Helmy earn the margin the landlord used to collect.
What's the impact: Jakarta founders building for traders should sell the missing half of the shift rather than the storefront: filming, listing and same-day fulfilment, one physical market at a time. Pondok Labu has 26 empty kiosks and a supplier list nobody has digitised.
Your costs
- What does the peso's record low cost a Manila importer? P62.625, with Brent near $100 — The Philippine Star
The peso closed at 62.625 to the dollar, past the 62.59 record set on September 4. Brent crude near $100 a barrel pushes the same import bill higher from the other side.
Positive-sum angle: A cheaper peso pays whoever earns in dollars. BPO desks, freelance developers billing abroad and Cebu exporters bank the same move that raises the importer's landed cost, and that income lands in the same domestic economy.
What's the impact: Philippine operators buying in dollars should reprice quarterly instead of annually and quote landed cost rather than FOB. Manila founders holding dollar receivables carry a natural hedge worth more this quarter than any promo they could run.
The tool
- Where the buyers went: content commerce now moves 37 percent of Southeast Asia's platform GMV — TNGlobal
Momentum Works puts Southeast Asian content commerce at $33.8 billion in the first half of 2026 and $77.9 billion for the year, 37 percent of platform GMV against 20 percent in 2024.
Positive-sum angle: Live selling pays a chain the storefront never did: the creator, the affiliate who clips the stream, the packer, the courier. One trader's stock now supports four incomes where it once covered one rent cheque.
What's the impact: Momentum Works notes China's model does not transplant. The affiliate layer for tier-two Indonesian and Filipino sellers, booking, scripting, clipping and settling commission, stays thin; SEA founders can build it before the platforms take it in-house.

Never miss a SEA deal.
