Intelligence goes free and local; power and capital set the ceiling.

Commodity intelligence focus · power constraint · capital concentration

Tech Breakthroughs
- A 2.6B model outscores 9B rivals on tool calls: Liquid AI's LFM2.5 runs on a phone — MarkTechPost
The 2.69B-parameter model carries a 131,072-token context, ships open weights on Hugging Face in GGUF, MLX, and ONNX formats, and leads Gemma-4-E4B and Qwen3.5-9B on ToolSandbox and Multi-IF while running 30 tokens per second on a phone.
Positive-sum angle: Agent capability that fits inside 2.5GB of memory lifts everyone downstream of the model. Device makers, offline-first tooling, and builders in markets with thin bandwidth all gain a floor they can build on without paying an inference toll on every call.
What's the impact: SEA founders serving Indonesian and Philippine users on mid-range Android should plan agent features around on-device inference, not cloud round-trips. Reset unit economics now, before competitors reprice against a zero-marginal-cost floor.
Emerging Industries
- SEA's data centres need megawatts before GPUs: Temasek's GenZero backs a 1.8GW clean-energy platform — TNGlobal
GenZero, Temasek's decarbonisation arm, invested in the pre-Series A of PCG Global, a Singapore-based platform running roughly 1.8GW of distributed solar, utility-scale plants, and storage across Southeast Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East.
Positive-sum angle: Financing the generation layer widens the whole corridor. Every megawatt PCG brings online raises the ceiling for data-centre operators, industrial parks, and grid-adjacent startups that cannot build their own supply, and gives lenders a reference asset to underwrite the next project against.
What's the impact: Operators planning ASEAN compute should secure power offtake before rack space. Founders in Jakarta and Johor can position energy-management and storage software now, while the procurement contracts for 2027 capacity are still being written.
Open Source Projects
- One engineer, one week, and the seat licence looks fragile: Genspark open-sources GenOffice under Apache 2.0 — MarkTechPost
The free, ad-free suite ships docs, sheets, slides, and a PDF tool for macOS and Windows at version 0.4.110, built by one engineer in about a week on roughly $10,000 of model tokens.
Positive-sum angle: An Apache-2.0 office stack gives every downstream builder a base to fork rather than rebuild. Regional software firms, schools, and agencies gain a document layer they can host and audit themselves, and each fork sharpens the shared file-fidelity problem.
What's the impact: SEA software teams should treat productivity surfaces as forkable infrastructure, not a category to enter. Build the Bahasa and Thai document handling and the data-residency wrapper that MAS-regulated and public-sector buyers still cannot buy from a US vendor.
Business Models
- Singapore took 227 of 261 AI rounds; the rest of ASEAN split under $40 million — TNGlobal / Tracxn
Tracxn counts $9.3 billion into Southeast Asia's native AI companies across 261 disclosed equity rounds, with Singapore taking 227 of them. Vietnam followed at $19 million, Malaysia $8 million, Indonesia $6 million, Thailand $4 million.
Positive-sum angle: Concentration in one hub still routes capital into the region rather than past it. Singapore-domiciled structures let teams operating in Jakarta, Hanoi, and Manila raise against a market investors already underwrite, while the operating jobs land where the customers are.
What's the impact: Founders building in Vietnam and Indonesia should structure the Singapore entity before the raise, not during it. Treat domicile as distribution to capital, and price the region's talent cost advantage into the operating plan.

Never miss a SEA deal.
