Intelligence goes free; the meter and the megawatt keep the rent.

Tech Breakthroughs
- What is a model licence worth when the weights ship free? Alibaba opens Qwen3.8-Max — South China Morning Post
Alibaba made its 2.4-trillion-parameter flagship widely accessible ahead of an open-weights release next week. The model carries a one-million-token context window, roughly 750,000 words per query.
Positive-sum angle: Open weights at frontier scale lift everyone building above the model. Regional cloud operators, fine-tuners, and vertical toolmakers all gain a base they can host, audit, and specialise, and the savings compound each time the licence fee falls out of the stack.
What's the impact: SEA founders should price roadmaps against self-hosted frontier weights, not per-token API contracts. Renegotiate 2027 inference budgets now, while vendors still quote against last year's scarcity.
Emerging Industries
- Malaysia's data-centre demand peaks in 2030; the nuclear relief arrives years after the bill — Tech Times
Malaysian data-centre consumption climbs from 8.5 terawatt-hours in 2024 toward a projected 68 by 2030, nearing 30% of national supply. CBRE models a 15-to-25-gigawatt regional shortfall by 2028.
Positive-sum angle: A dated shortfall turns power into a buildable market rather than a complaint. Grid operators, solar developers, storage integrators, and cooling specialists all get a firm demand curve to underwrite against, and every megawatt added lowers the queue for the next tenant.
What's the impact: Energy and cooling builders across the Johor-Singapore corridor should sign offtake before 2028, when the shortfall prices itself. The scarce asset is a grid connection, not a rack.
Open Source Projects
- Coding agents forget between sessions, and that is the bottleneck: Tencent open-sources a memory hub — MarkTechPost
Tencent Cloud released TencentDB Agent Memory v2.0 under an MIT licence, a self-hosted store that lets a team's AI coding agents share accumulated context instead of rebuilding it every session.
Positive-sum angle: Team-level memory as open infrastructure means smaller shops stop rebuilding the same plumbing. Each deployment feeds fixes back into a shared substrate, and the agent layer gets cheaper to run for every builder who adopts it rather than for one vendor's customers.
What's the impact: SEA engineering teams should own the memory layer themselves before wiring it to a single vendor. Self-hosting keeps the data-residency answer that MAS and Bank Indonesia now ask for in writing.
Business Models
- When the agent bills per resolution, what happens to the seat? Zendesk charges $1.50 a ticket — Computer Weekly
Zendesk moved its AI service agents to outcome pricing at $1.50 per automated resolution on committed volume and $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Intercom charges $0.99 a resolution, HubSpot $0.50.
Positive-sum angle: Metering on results rather than logins aligns the vendor with the buyer for the first time in the SaaS era. Failed attempts cost nothing, which pushes quality upstream and gives smaller entrants a fair way to prove value against incumbent seat contracts.
What's the impact: SEA operators renewing per-seat software in 2026 should demand outcome terms while vendors still compete on the switch. The pricing primitive is the negotiation, not the feature list.

Never miss a SEA deal.
