Tech Breakthroughs
- Two points behind the frontier, and the weights ship free: Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max scores 86.6 — MarkTechPost
Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max on August 3, a 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model reading text, image, and video across a million-token context. It scores 86.6 on Terminal-Bench 2.1 against GPT-5.6 Sol's 88.8, at $2 per million input tokens.
Positive-sum angle: Open weights at this tier reset the price of capability for everyone downstream. Regional cloud hosts, fine-tuning shops, and agent builders inherit a frontier-class base they neither trained nor rent, and the tooling layer above it compounds as the per-token floor keeps dropping.
What's the impact: SEA founders should budget the next twelve months of agent work at two dollars per million tokens, not lab-tier rates. Contracts signed on 2025 inference assumptions are overpriced now; renegotiate before renewal rather than after.
Emerging Industries
- Singapore holds at 1.1GW, Johor runs 0.7% vacant: the compute crosses the Causeway — TechNode Global
Singapore's 2019 moratorium and rationed capacity awards keep live data-centre capacity near 1.1 gigawatts. Johor already runs past a gigawatt at 0.7% vacancy, Jakarta has 1.6 gigawatts committed, and Bangkok goes from 122 to 402 megawatts by 2027.
Positive-sum angle: Rationing in one market builds the industry in four. Johor, Batam, Jakarta, and Bangkok gain grid upgrades, cooling supply chains, and commissioning crews that outlast any single tenant, while Singapore keeps the design, finance, and control functions the region still buys from it.
What's the impact: Malaysian and Indonesian developers should sell power certainty rather than land price, because vacancy near zero prices the constraint. SEA operators still holding Singapore capacity should reprice it as a control-plane premium, not raw floor space.
Open Source Projects
- Agents hit 100% on builds and still fumble access rules: Supabase ships Evals under Apache-2.0 — MarkTechPost
Supabase released Evals on August 1, an Apache-2.0 harness that runs coding agents against containerised Supabase stacks seeded from real support tickets. Opus 5 and Kimi K3 cleared the build stage at 100%, while row-level security policies stayed the weak surface.
Positive-sum angle: A published benchmark turns vendor claims into a shared reference. Every team adopting the harness gets one yardstick for agent risk, and the failure clusters it exposes, declarative schemas and server-side auth, tell framework authors what to document next.
What's the impact: SEA fintech and health teams under MAS and OJK scrutiny should run agent evals against their own policy layer before shipping agent-written migrations. That audit trail costs less to build now than to reconstruct after a data-residency finding.
Business Models
- Four marketplaces just became tax collectors: Indonesia withholds 0.5% of every seller's turnover — The Jakarta Post
From August 1, Tokopedia, Shopee, Lazada, and Blibli withhold 0.5% of gross seller turnover as income tax under PMK 37/2025. Sellers below 500 million rupiah a year can claim exemption on declaration.
Positive-sum angle: Collection at the platform layer formalises a long-informal base. Sellers gain verifiable revenue history that lenders and payment providers can underwrite against, and the state widens coverage from a ledger it already trusts without adding a new tax.
What's the impact: SEA commerce founders should treat withholding as a product surface rather than a compliance cost. Reconciliation, tax-credit reporting, and exemption handling sit unbuilt across Indonesia's seller base, and Vietnam and the Philippines will copy the mechanism.

Never miss a SEA deal.
