Tech Breakthroughs
- When a 15-second 2K clip costs $1.95, who still buys a video pipeline? MiniMax ships H3 — MarkTechPost
MiniMax launched H3 on July 31, an omni-modal model that takes text, images, video, and audio in one call and returns 2K clips with native stereo sound at roughly 13 cents per second.
Positive-sum angle: Collapsing four models into one call lowers the floor for everyone downstream. Editors, ad shops, and localisation studios stop stitching pipelines together and start competing on taste, while the tooling layer above the API compounds in value as clip costs fall.
What's the impact: SEA content operators shipping Bahasa, Thai, and Vietnamese variants should reprice production around a two-dollar clip. Build the review and rights layer this quarter, because generation stops being the bottleneck and clearance becomes it.
Emerging Industries
- Servers just passed cars as Mexico's top US export; Taiwan's plants moved, at $46.9B and counting — Marginal Revolution, citing the Financial Times
Taiwanese contract manufacturers expanded Mexican plants far enough that servers overtook cars as Mexico's largest US export, reaching $46.9 billion in sales this year against Taiwan's $53.5 billion.
Positive-sum angle: Server assembly travels well, and that portability spreads the gains. Every country that lands a line gains toolmakers, logistics depth, and test capacity, which is why the work keeps splitting across more geographies instead of consolidating in one.
What's the impact: ASEAN industrial-park operators and EMS suppliers in Penang, Batam, and Bac Ninh should court the same server lines while sourcing decisions stay open. Sell power, bonded logistics, and test capacity rather than labour cost.
Open Source Projects
- A fully open MoE trained without a single Nvidia GPU: AMD ships Instella-MoE-16B-A3B — MarkTechPost
AMD released Instella-MoE-16B-A3B, a 16-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 2.8 billion active per token, pretrained on 7.1 trillion tokens across Instinct MI300X and MI325X GPUs, with the training code under MIT.
Positive-sum angle: A credible model trained end to end on non-Nvidia silicon widens the supply of places anyone can train. Cloud operators, university labs, and national compute programmes gain a second viable stack, and the published recipe lets others repeat the run.
What's the impact: SEA national AI programmes and regional clouds negotiating GPU allocation should treat ROCm as a live option in the next procurement cycle. A second stack is leverage on price and on delivery dates.
Business Models
- Who pays for free weights? Open-model startups get nothing while two labs take 60% of VC — PYMNTS
American open-weight startups including Arcee AI, Reflection AI, and Poolside report cold venture markets, with Arcee's chief executive saying every tier-one firm declined, while OpenAI and Anthropic absorbed over 60% of US venture dollars in the first half.
Positive-sum angle: Free weights still create value; the open question is where it lands. Application builders, inference hosts, and fine-tuning shops capture the surplus model labs cannot bill for, which is why the open layer keeps expanding on other balance sheets.
What's the impact: SEA founders should stop pricing a model as the product and price the workflow around it. The durable margin sits in distribution, data residency, and vertical depth, not in weights anyone can download for nothing.
- Alphabet's first cash burn since 2004: $44.9B of quarterly capex turns free cash flow negative — Search Engine Journal
Alphabet posted negative free cash flow of $5.85 billion in the second quarter, its first as a public company, after capital spending doubled to $44.9 billion and full-year guidance rose to a range of $195 to $205 billion.
Positive-sum angle: That spending is other companies' revenue. Grid contractors, cooling suppliers, land holders, and power developers book multi-year backlogs, and the capacity outlives the current model cycle as shared infrastructure others rent.
What's the impact: SEA operators selling into hyperscaler buildouts should lock multi-year contracts while capex guidance keeps rising. Substation work, water treatment, and commissioning crews price better in 2026 than they will once the queue clears.

Never miss a SEA deal.
