Inference keeps getting cheaper; proof and pavement do not.

Tech Breakthroughs
- The cheap model beats the flagship: DeepSeek's V4-Flash-0731 wins all nine agent benchmarks — MarkTechPost
DeepSeek published the retrained V4-Flash-0731 to Hugging Face on Friday and opened its API beta. The build scores 82.7 on Terminal Bench 2.1 against 72.1 for the larger V4-Pro-Preview, at $0.14 per million input tokens.
Positive-sum angle: A cheap tier that outruns the expensive one resets the floor for everyone building on top. Agent harnesses, review bots, and support desks priced out at lab rates now clear their unit economics, and the tooling layer above the model keeps the saving.
What's the impact: SEA founders pricing agent products against last quarter's API rates should rebuild the model. Jakarta and Manila workloads that failed on cost at dollars per million tokens clear at fourteen cents; ship the ones already written off.
Emerging Industries
- Autonomy becomes a business when the meter starts: Grab charges Punggol fares in Q4 — Grab
Grab will let Punggol riders book a dedicated autonomous vehicle point to point instead of riding a fixed shuttle loop. Trial riders board within months; the public gets access in Q4 2026, when commercial fares apply.
Positive-sum angle: Charging for a driverless ride prices the whole category. Insurers, regulators, and the WeRide stack Grab runs on all gain a revenue benchmark instead of a pilot budget, and every ASEAN city planning a deployment inherits the number.
What's the impact: SEA mobility and insurance builders should position around the fare, not the vehicle. Remote-supervision desks, depot charging, and per-ride liability products get procured in the eighteen months after a city prices its first commercial autonomous trip.
Open Source Projects
- Scanners that cry wolf are worthless: Strix proves every bug and passes 45,000 stars — GitHub
The open-source pentest agent runs the code, chains exploits, and attaches a working proof of concept and a fix patch to every finding. It has passed 45,000 GitHub stars and adds roughly 4,000 a week.
Positive-sum angle: Proof-carrying findings change what a security tool is worth downstream. Auditors, insurers, and small engineering teams can act on a validated exploit without a specialist reading it first, so scarce reviewer time moves to the bugs that need judgement.
What's the impact: SEA teams shipping under MAS technology risk guidelines and Indonesia's PDP law should wire proof-carrying scans into CI before hiring the next security engineer. The evidence trail is the deliverable a regulator asks for.
Business Models
- Three weeks after launch the price drops 80%: OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 Luna to twenty cents — CNBC
OpenAI cut Luna from $1 to $0.20 per million input tokens and trimmed Terra by 20%, three weeks after the GPT-5.6 family launched. The flagship Sol kept its price.
Positive-sum angle: A price war fought on the cheap tiers rather than the flagship hands the gain to volume businesses instead of frontier labs. Every workflow running millions of small calls, support triage, document extraction, catalogue cleanup, gets a margin it lacked in June.
What's the impact: SEA operators should reprice the high-volume, low-margin work first: Bahasa and Thai document processing, seller onboarding, KYC review. The flagship tier held its price, so the arbitrage sits in the cheap models, not the smart ones.

Never miss a SEA deal.
