Everyone gets the weights; almost no one gets the megawatts.

Substrate focus · commodity models · scarce capacity

Tech Breakthroughs
- America's labs kept the weights closed; Thinking Machines opens Inkling at 975B parameters — TechCrunch
Thinking Machines Lab released Inkling on 15 July, a 975B-parameter mixture-of-experts model activating 41B per query, reasoning natively over text, images and audio, under Apache 2.0 with weights on Hugging Face.
Positive-sum angle: An open customisation base lifts every team that cannot pretrain. Fine-tuners, evaluation vendors and vertical builders all compound on shared weights, and each specialised derivative makes the next one cheaper to train for the whole ecosystem.
What's the impact: SEA founders building vertical models in Bahasa, Thai or Vietnamese should treat frontier-grade weights as a procurement input, not a moat. Budget for fine-tuning and evaluation talent rather than pretraining compute.
Emerging Industries
- Singapore has the demand and no land: Malaysia and Batam absorb a $13.7B colocation market — GlobeNewswire
Southeast Asia's data centre colocation market is forecast to grow from $5.76B in 2025 to $13.69B by 2031, a 15.5% CAGR, with Malaysia drawing capital on cheap land and power while Batam builds on reliable supply.
Positive-sum angle: Constraint in one market seeds an industry in the next. Land, grid and cooling suppliers across Johor and the Riau Islands gain a durable order book, and the cross-border capacity keeps Singapore competitive as the region's control plane.
What's the impact: ASEAN infrastructure operators should lock power purchase agreements and land options before hyperscaler procurement desks price the corridor. The window for pre-contract positioning in Batam and Malaysia closes as capacity gets committed.
Open Source Projects
- Agent orchestration turns into a public good: ByteDance's DeerFlow passes 77,000 stars under MIT — GitHub
DeerFlow, ByteDance's open long-horizon agent harness, shipped a ground-up 2.0 rewrite in late June. It orchestrates sub-agents, sandboxes, memory and extensible skills on LangGraph, and now carries 77,300 GitHub stars under an MIT licence.
Positive-sum angle: A permissively licensed harness turns agent plumbing into shared infrastructure. Smaller teams extend it rather than rebuild sandboxing and memory, and every contributed skill raises the floor for everyone shipping long-running agents.
What's the impact: SEA operators should adopt an open harness before wiring workflows into a single vendor's agent runtime. Owning the orchestration layer keeps data residency negotiable as MAS and Bank Indonesia tighten their rules.
Business Models
- Agents will handle a fifth of transactions: ASEAN's merchant fees compress 0.05 points a year — The Edge Malaysia
Digital payments are projected to reach 73% of ASEAN gross transaction value by 2030 as cash falls from 39% to 27%. Consumers expect AI agents to handle up to 20% of transactions, while merchant discount rates keep sliding.
Positive-sum angle: Falling take rates widen the market they are taken from. Lower friction pulls informal sellers onto formal rails, and orchestration, reconciliation and fraud layers capture value that pure interchange no longer supports.
What's the impact: SEA fintech founders should price for a compressing MDR rather than defend it. Build the reconciliation, intent-verification and dispute layers that agent-initiated payments will require across PayNow, DuitNow and PromptPay.

Never miss a SEA deal.
