Seneca owned estates on the bay of Naples and, by his own account, more silver plate than a senator needed. Twice a month, on days he set for himself, he traded all of it for a hard pallet, a coarse tunic and bread three days old. Not rehearsal: he wanted to know, before the question was forced on him, whether losing the plate was the disaster he assumed.

The Stoics called this voluntary discomfort.

The exercise works only if the discomfort is real, the schedule belongs to him, and the fear being tested is the one he carries, not a smaller one standing in for it. Seneca measured his fear with the plate still sitting in the next room, waiting for his return.

Ho Chi Minh City runs the same arithmetic this September, on a warehouse instead of a pallet.

A founder running fulfilment for cross-border sellers is offered four thousand square metres south of the city: Grade A racking, cold storage, room for the durian and dragon-fruit exporters asking for a cold chain since Q2. The space prices close to the going rate for prime Ho Chi Minh City warehouse, a little over five dollars a square metre a month. Staff, trucks and insurance for the bigger footprint push her total monthly cost to nearly three times what she pays now.

In an ordinary year, she would weigh a decision like that against next quarter’s revenue.

This year, part of that revenue depends on a round that may not land on schedule. Southeast Asia’s venture funding has just had its worst first half on record, and not one dedicated Southeast Asian private equity fund reached a final close in the same stretch.1 Most of the money that did move went to EQT, Blackstone and Bain Capital instead, who closed a combined US$39.2 billion in pan-Asia vehicles over the same period.

None of it is hers by contract.

None of it is hers by contract.

So she runs the poverty week on the lease, not on herself.

The mechanism travels. Two weeks before you sign anything that would multiply a fixed cost, say a warehouse, a second office, or the headcount plan you have been sitting on, book the new number into the model as though the ink were already dry. Cut what an ordinary month would absorb unnoticed, and freeze the hire you were saving for the day the bigger commitment justified it.

Fourteen days in, you have the one number in the deal that is yours: the smallest revenue the commitment survives on, priced before you owe it.

Seneca’s estates were never at risk the week he slept on the pallet. Yours might be, which is most of the distance between a philosopher’s exercise and a founder’s, and also the reason the founder’s version is worth more. You are pricing a fear on your own schedule, before the landlord, the board or the market prices it for you.

Let the pallet be a real one, Seneca wrote to Lucilius, and the bread hard and grimy: endure it for three or four days, sometimes more, so that it becomes a test of yourself, not a hobby.

Footnotes

  1. The US$39.2 billion is pan-Asia capital, not Southeast Asia earmarked. A fund domiciled in Singapore or Hong Kong can commit to Jakarta or it can commit to Osaka, and in the first half of 2026 most of it chose Osaka.
