Rome sent Seneca to Corsica in the year 41, on a charge of adultery with Caligula’s sister that few people believed.
He had been among the most sought-after advocates in the city. On the island he had a rock, a view of the sea, and eight years.
Whatever made him formidable in a Roman court had no purchase there. Corsica had no juries, and nobody on it needed persuading.
The Stoics had a name for what he still owned, if he owned it. Phronesis: practical wisdom, the judgement that works on incomplete information, in the actual case, at the hour it is needed.
It is the hardest of the virtues to audit, because positional information feels exactly like judgement from the inside.

Kenneth Tan found out which he had, in Singapore, some time after 2014.
He had been a director of product at DeNA, the Tokyo-listed gaming company. People took his calls there because of where he sat, on the buy side, spending the network’s money.
Then he left, and the calls stopped being taken.
“You quickly realize that your previous titles, network and experience matter for little once you enter the startup realm.”
That much you could have predicted. The next sentence is the one that cost him something to say.
“It forced me to realize that I was immature, disconnected from reality as a corporate worker, incredibly good at corporate navigation but bad at creating real value.”
Read that again, because the consoling version of this story is the one you have been trained to expect. The judgement survives the fall. The founder discovers he was always the sharp one, and the title had merely been standing in the light.
Tan found the reverse. The faculty he had been promoted for turned out to be a talent for moving inside an organisation, and it built nothing once there was no organisation to move inside.
That is the test phronesis sets, and it runs on a schedule you do not pick. It arrives in the quarter the renewals stop, the round that does not close, the month the introductions dry up because the logo that made them worth taking is gone.
So run it early, while the desk is still under you.

Tan ran that audit and came back with corporate navigation, and his own verdict on corporate navigation was that it built nothing. What survived was a narrow talent for arithmetic. He has run the company on it since, killed his own consumer platform with it, and taken it onto a Nasdaq ticker.
Seneca came back too. Rome recalled him in 49, into the imperial household and then into the service of Nero, and the return did him no good in the end.1
Practical wisdom is the one holding nobody can seize from you, and it is also the one you are least able to verify while things are going well.
