Someone's payday
- Siam Amazing Park ran 45 years, so why might its founder sell it for US$300 million? — Khaosod English
Founder Chaiwat Luang-ammornlert says last month's floods did nearly US$15 million in damage to the Bangkok water park, sinking almost all of its 40 rides. Unless banks or the government help, he may sell it for about US$300 million.
Positive-sum angle: Chaiwat's terms keep the staff inside any sale, so the jobs travel with the rides. Ride repairers, pump suppliers and insurers gain a public price for what one Bangkok flood does to a large site, a number every owner on low ground can plan against.
What's the impact: Owners of low-lying Bangkok sites, from car washes to cafés, should cost a three-to-six-month closure, the repair time Chaiwat expects, and check what their insurance covers before the next rains.
Your costs
- Bangkok diesel hit US$1.30 a litre on Friday: a van's 50-litre fill now costs US$1.10 more — Nation Thailand
OR, the retail arm of PTT, and Bangchak raised petrol, gasohol (petrol mixed with ethanol) and diesel by about US$0.02 a litre on 2 October, taking Bangkok diesel to about US$1.30. It follows several rises in September.
Positive-sum angle: Each rise makes B20, the 20% biodiesel blend at about US$1.10 (37.19 baht) a litre, a better deal for fleets whose engines take it. Palm-oil growers who supply the blend and fuel-card firms that track fills gain as operators shop by the litre.
What's the impact: At US$0.02 (0.75 baht) a litre, this rise alone costs a Bangkok courier with ten vans filling 50 litres six days a week about US$3,500 a year. Fleet owners should check which vans can run B20 before passing the cost to customers.
The tool
- Can a flooded Bangkok shop cut its loan payments by 75%? Krungthai takes applications until 31 December — Nation Thailand
Krungthai Bank lets flood-hit retail and small-business borrowers cut monthly repayments by up to 75% for a year. Its small-business term loans charge 0% for three months, then 2.5% fixed for 33 months.
Positive-sum angle: Cheap repair credit keeps suppliers paid and staff on payroll while a shop is shut. EXIM Bank, Thailand's state export bank, adds a temporary 20% lift on exporters' working-capital limits, so the factories that sell to those shops keep moving too.
What's the impact: A flooded Bangkok café owner should call Krungthai (02-111-1111, ext. 99) before the 31 December cut-off. Bookkeepers who gather the damage photos, invoices and forms for small owners can sell that as a fixed-fee package for the next three months.
