Someone's payday
- Diners kept coming, so why did Soup Restaurant lose US$520,000 in six months? — Vulcan Post
Singapore chain Soup Restaurant swung to a US$520,000 first-half loss from a US$170,000 profit a year earlier. Revenue held at US$15 million across 15 outlets; ingredients, wages and a one-off fee to exit a lease ate the margin.
Positive-sum angle: Existing outlets took in US$470,000 more this half, so the kitchen still works and the loss sits in the overheads. Every weak room closed frees staff and stock for the strong ones, and malls get a clearer read on which food tenants still pay.
What's the impact: A Singapore or KL food operator with more than three outlets should rank each by rent against sales this quarter and price the exit fee before the next renewal. A closure negotiated a year early costs less than the one-off fee Soup Restaurant just booked.
Your costs
- Can a Philippine bus hold its fare when diesel jumped US$0.32 a litre in three weeks? — Philstar
Philippine pump prices rose again on 22 September: diesel up US$0.15 a litre, US$0.32 in three weeks. Bus operators including Victory Liner say fuel is 45 to 60 percent of their costs, and fare increases approved in March remain suspended.
Positive-sum angle: Fuel shocks reward whoever moves more people per litre. Operators that fill seats through advance booking and merged routes spread each rise over more fares, and the firms that sell them route and load data gain customers.
What's the impact: Philippine businesses running delivery vans or staff shuttles should budget October fuel at today's price, with the full September rise of US$0.32 (P18.31) a litre built in. The Department of Energy expects prices to stay high for weeks after a drone attack damaged a Saudi oil pipeline.
The tool
- US$0.10 an hour: what it now costs to type out a day of customer calls — MarkTechPost
SpaceXAI's Grok Voice Transcribe 2.0 turns recorded audio into text for US$0.10 an hour, or US$0.20 an hour live. It labels each speaker at no extra charge, timestamps every word, and follows a speaker who switches language mid-recording.
Positive-sum angle: At US$0.10 an hour, the recording becomes the record. Sales teams, clinics and tuition centres can search every conversation they already hold, and the builders who sort those transcripts into follow-ups gain a new market.
What's the impact: It ships as an API only, with no app on top. A Manila or Jakarta team whose calls mix English with Tagalog or Bahasa should test it on a week of recordings; the wrapper that files each transcript into a customer database is still open to build.
