Someone's payday
- What do three tons of dragon fruit pay now? Ho Van Hoa took home US$320 — VnExpress International
Farmgate dragon fruit prices in Vietnam's Lam Dong province fell 53 to 90 percent, to between US$0.08 and US$0.27 a kilogram against a break-even of US$0.38. Ho Van Hoa sold three tons for US$320 in total.
Positive-sum angle: Processing is the floor the fresh market lacks. Every ton Lam Dong dries, freezes or juices instead of shipping north lifts the price the next grower sees, and the cold chain built for it serves durian, mango and longan in the same season.
What's the impact: Vietnamese processors and Ho Chi Minh City food brands should lock forward contracts at this week's prices rather than next harvest's. China now grows its own dragon fruit, so the volume Lam Dong must place sits in India, Thailand and the Gulf.
Your costs
- Hog farmgate fell to US$1.90 a kilo; Manila wet markets still charge US$5.10 for kasim — Daily Tribune
Live hog prices in the Philippines sit at US$1.90 to US$2.50 a kilogram, below the US$3.30 floor the industry wants. Kasim, the pork shoulder cut, still sells at US$5.10 a kilogram in wet markets.
Positive-sum angle: Cheap protein moves margin to whoever cooks it: carinderias, the small roadside eateries feeding Manila, plus siomai makers and frozen-meal brands. They get a quarter to set a menu price and hold it, and cold storage filled now keeps working when tariffs return.
What's the impact: Philippine food operators should buy and freeze at this quarter's farmgate, then reprice in January. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. wants pork import tariffs restored, and a higher tariff lifts the imported price before it reaches the farmgate.
The tool
- An hour of live interpretation for US$1.54: Alibaba's new translator lags 2.3 seconds behind the speaker — MarkTechPost
Alibaba released Qwen3.8-LiveTranslate, an interpreter that translates speech while the speaker is still talking. It understands 60 languages and speaks back in 29, with average lag of 2.3 seconds. Singapore-region pricing works out near US$1.54 an hour of speech.
Positive-sum angle: Agencies priced interpretation per day and booked it per event. An hourly rate puts a Cebu support desk, a Jakarta livestream seller and a Hanoi factory tour on the same fluency, and the transcripts they generate become training data nobody had.
What's the impact: The model ships as a raw API with closed weights, so the product layer is open. A live-commerce overlay that lets a Bangkok seller stream once and sell in four markets does not ship inside Shopee Live or TikTok Shop today.
