Tech Breakthroughs
- When one demo replaces the training run: Generalist's GEN-1.5 hits 59% success with zero gradient steps — MarkTechPost
Generalist AI's GEN-1.5 takes a 3 to 12 second demonstration into a 30-second context window and performs the task, averaging 59% success across ten manipulation tasks with no fine-tuning. Ten gradient steps lift that to 83%.
Positive-sum angle: One-shot physical prompting turns robot capability into something a line operator teaches, rather than something a robotics team funds. Every factory, warehouse and clinic that already records its work becomes a training source, and the demonstration data compounds across every deployment that follows.
What's the impact: SEA contract manufacturers in Penang, Batam and Binh Duong should start capturing sensorimotor recordings of their existing lines this year. The demonstration library becomes the asset when GEN-class models open up, and no vendor will sell that footage back.
Emerging Industries
- Clean fleets pay best at the premium end: Green GSM puts seven-seat EV taxis into Makati — The Manila Times
Green GSM launched Premium Taxi on 25 August, an all-electric seven-seat service running VinFast Limo Green cars across Makati, Taguig, Mandaluyong and Pasig. Its Philippine fleet has covered 32.6 million kilometres over nearly five million trips.
Positive-sum angle: Premium fares fund the charging and service layer that cheaper tiers cannot carry alone. Drivers earn on higher-value trips, VinFast books fleet volume, and every charger built in Metro Manila for the top tier lowers the entry cost for the operators underneath it.
What's the impact: Philippine and Vietnamese mobility operators should price the clean fleet at the top of the market first, where luggage space and cabin quality still command a premium. Build the charging footprint on those margins before mass-tier competition compresses them.
Open Source Projects
- Model cards stop predicting phone performance: Liquid AI open-sources Pipette across 1,000 device configurations — MarkTechPost
Liquid AI released Pipette under Apache 2.0, measuring model, quantization, runtime and device as one unit. The launch dataset covers more than 1,000 configurations across 30-plus models, with Artificial Analysis verifying the methodology.
Positive-sum angle: A public results dataset hands every small team the hardware evidence that only large OEMs used to hold. Chip vendors gain a neutral scoreboard, app builders stop guessing at decode throughput, and each submitted run makes the next procurement decision cheaper for everyone.
What's the impact: SEA product teams shipping on mid-tier Android, still the default handset from Jakarta to Manila, should benchmark the exact quantization and runtime before committing a sprint. Two same-size models retained 78.4% and 33.8% of decode throughput on identical hardware.
Business Models
- When does a business day end? Visa and Nium test seven-day stablecoin settlement under MAS BLOOM — Fintech News Singapore
Visa named Nium its first pilot partner under BLOOM, the Monetary Authority of Singapore initiative for cross-border payments. The pilot settles on weekends and public holidays using regulated dollar and euro stablecoins over Visa's network.
Positive-sum angle: Retiring the settlement calendar releases working capital that sat idle every weekend across the whole corridor. Remitters, payroll platforms and marketplaces gain the same days at once, and the float they stop financing turns into pricing room for the customer.
What's the impact: SEA remittance and payroll founders should rebuild cash-flow models on a seven-day settlement assumption before the rails go live. The weekend float that quietly funds many current spreads disappears, and products priced on it need a second revenue line.
- Payments alone stopped being the product: ShardLab takes a stake in StoreHub's 20,000 merchant locations — FinTech Global
ShardLab, the Hashed-backed venture studio, took a strategic stake in Kuala Lumpur's StoreHub and formed a joint venture for payment and rewards products. StoreHub processes 200 million transactions a year, around $3.5 billion, across four markets.
Positive-sum angle: A merchant base that size turns rewards experiments into real tests rather than pilots. Small merchants get loyalty tooling priced for enterprises, consumers get points that travel across four markets, and each product proven on the base lowers the build cost of the next.
What's the impact: SEA commerce founders should choose the layer above the terminal now: loyalty, working-capital lending, or catalogue AI. The point-of-sale install base is the distribution, and it is being locked into joint ventures market by market this year.

Never miss a SEA deal.
