Value slides beneath the headline layer; the plumbing prices itself.

Substrate focus · open weights · unglamorous margin

Tech Breakthroughs
- A five-minute song now costs a GPU, not a studio: MiniMax opens Music3's weights — MarkTechPost
MiniMax released Music3 with open weights, generating complete five-minute songs at 32kHz stereo from lyrics and a structured caption. It runs under 24GB of VRAM, and down to 8GB with offloading.
Positive-sum angle: Open weights turn a soundtrack budget into a compute line, and value moves to whoever holds catalogue, rights clearance, and audience. Regional labels, ad agencies, and game studios gain a production floor they stop renting from a Western vendor.
What's the impact: Content operators in Jakarta, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh should reprice music budgets around self-hosted inference, then read the licence closely. Revenue above $20 million triggers separate written authorisation from MiniMax, so negotiate that term before a catalogue depends on it.
Emerging Industries
- Only a quarter of a nuclear plant is nuclear: CGS says Malaysia can sell the other 75 percent — TNGlobal
CGS International puts the nuclear island at 25 to 30 percent of a plant, with conventional construction and instrumentation making up the rest, as Vietnam revives large projects and Indonesia studies small modular and floating reactors.
Positive-sum angle: Reactor demand lifts suppliers who never build one. Malaysian engineering, electronics, and instrumentation firms already qualify for the conventional three quarters, and every ASEAN plant financed widens a regional vendor base that later serves grid, desalination, and heavy-industrial work.
What's the impact: Malaysian and Singaporean industrial suppliers should start nuclear qualification now, years before Vietnam pours concrete. Certification cycles run long, and the approved vendor list gets written well before the procurement budget does.
- Distribution beats the factory: VinFast adds 30 Indonesian showrooms while its Subang line runs — TNGlobal
VinFast signed an MOU with Indonesia's Gowa Motor Group for at least 30 showrooms and service centres, on top of more than 40 already open and 150 planned, with production under way in Subang, West Java.
Positive-sum angle: A Vietnamese manufacturer buying Indonesian dealer coverage builds an intra-ASEAN corridor that runs on regional partners rather than imports. Charging operators, financing arms, and fleet buyers all draw on the same service network once the showrooms exist.
What's the impact: SEA mobility founders should chase service coverage and charging density over unit price. Indonesian EV adoption stalls on after-sales, so the durable position sits in workshops, parts logistics, and fleet financing, not in another badge.
Open Source Projects
- The model was never the moat: DeepSeek open-sources its agent harness under MIT — MarkTechPost
DeepSeek published Harness v0.1 under the MIT licence, built on the Cordis meta-framework where models, tools, sandboxes, sessions, and orchestration are all plugins. It ships OS-level sandboxing and supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock, Azure, and Gemini.
Positive-sum angle: A permissively licensed harness turns the control loop into shared infrastructure. Teams that swap the model underneath keep their tools, session logs, and sandboxes, which lowers switching costs across the ecosystem and pushes competition up to the workflows built on top.
What's the impact: SEA engineering teams should own the harness layer and treat the model as a replaceable line item. Wire agents to a portable control loop before a procurement contract locks one provider's tooling into the stack.
Business Models
- $41.8B of revenue, a $35B ask: SHEIN prices its Hong Kong listing under one times sales — TNGlobal
SHEIN targets a $35 to $40 billion valuation on 2025 net revenue of $41.8 billion and $2.06 billion net profit. First-quarter revenue grew 1.1 percent, and inventory turns every 36 days against Inditex's 71.
Positive-sum angle: The market prices the supply chain rather than the brand. A published 36-day turn gives regional manufacturers, freight operators, and warehouse platforms a public benchmark to sell against, and their customers a number to demand.
What's the impact: SEA commerce founders should read the multiple as a verdict on growth, not on operations. Build the inventory turn, then expect public markets to pay retail multiples for throughput and reserve software multiples for the tooling layer above it.
- A letter of credit still takes days to verify: PILA and TOTM move the check onto TradeTrust — TNGlobal
Vietnam's PILA and Singapore-listed TOTM Technologies signed an August MOU to digitise cross-border letter-of-credit verification with verifiable credentials on TradeTrust, replacing phone calls, SWIFT checks, and manual reconciliation that run several days.
Positive-sum angle: Verification is the cheapest place to fix trade finance because it changes no bank procedure. Every corridor added, with digital product passports planned across Vietnam, Singapore, and Indonesia, makes the same credential rail worth more to the next exporter on it.
What's the impact: SEA trade-finance and logistics founders should build on TradeTrust credentials rather than a proprietary format. Corridor rails get standardised during proof-of-concept phases like this one, and the integrations chosen now decide who clears the next decade of paperwork.

Never miss a SEA deal.
