Cheap intelligence arrives with an expiry date; ground assets do not.

Pricing terms focus · physical rails · SEA leverage

Tech Breakthroughs
- Cheap intelligence with a return date: Gemini 3.7 Flash costs $0.75 until December 31 — MarkTechPost
Google shipped Gemini 3.7 Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 output, both introductory rates that double on January 1, 2027. FrontierCode 1.1 scores rose to 43.6% from 34.4%.
Positive-sum angle: A promotional floor still resets what buyers expect to pay. Every regional team that prices a product against $0.75 inference this year forces the next vendor to defend that number, and the cheaper tier keeps agent workloads that would never survive flagship pricing.
What's the impact: SEA operators should build on the promotional tier and model the 2027 doubling now. Contracts signed on introductory inference pricing should carry a re-price clause, not a hope that the discount holds.
Emerging Industries
- Who owns the feedstock when jets decarbonise? PVOIL and FatHopes wire 200,000 tons of waste oil — TNGlobal
Malaysia's FatHopes Energy and PetroVietnam Oil will build Vietnam's first national used-cooking-oil collection network, starting in Ho Chi Minh City and targeting more than 200,000 tons of certified feedstock a year across roughly 1,000 petrol stations.
Positive-sum angle: Collection is the scarce part of sustainable aviation fuel, not refining. A traceable network turns restaurant waste into an export commodity, and the households, seafood plants and station operators along the route each gain a paid line where they had a disposal cost.
What's the impact: SEA climate operators should compete on collection routes and chain-of-custody data, not on refinery announcements. The traceability layer that satisfies EU and CORSIA auditors is what buyers pay a premium for through 2028.
- Geography now decides chip supply: NXP doubles its Petaling Jaya test floor to 900,000 square feet — TNGlobal
NXP broke ground on 500,000 square feet of new assembly and test space in Malaysia, taking the site to about 900,000 square feet and more than doubling output. Production ramps from the first quarter of 2028.
Positive-sum angle: Back-end capacity anchors a supplier base. Malaysian equipment vendors, automation integrators and test engineers gain 18 months of visible demand, and the joint ventures NXP runs in Singapore and Germany get a diversified finishing line.
What's the impact: Malaysian and Singaporean industrial suppliers should quote into the 2028 ramp during 2026, while qualification slots stay open. Automation and metrology skills price higher than assembly labour on this floor.
Open Source Projects
- Open weights, closed features: Qwen's 2.4T Max ships text-only under a scale-tiered license — Hugging Face
Alibaba released Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B, the first Max-class Qwen with downloadable weights: 2.4 trillion parameters, 95 billion activated, 262,144 native context. The release drops vision and video, forces thinking mode, and carries a custom license rather than Apache 2.0.
Positive-sum angle: A downloadable frontier-scale model still resets the self-hosting floor for everyone who cannot buy flagship API capacity. Regional inference hosts, quantisation communities and universities now hold a Max-class checkpoint that no vendor can withdraw from them.
What's the impact: SEA teams with sovereignty or data-residency mandates should test this checkpoint against their own workloads, then read the license tiers before pricing a service on it. Reasoning-only output changes latency budgets and cost per call.
Business Models
- The moat turned out to be product data: Graas raises $17M and buys Trustana — TNGlobal
Singapore's Graas closed a $17 million Series B led by Temasek-founded LemmaTree and acquired product-data platform Trustana, folding its enrichment layer into a commerce knowledge graph already drawing on more than $1 billion in live transactions.
Positive-sum angle: Structured catalogue data compounds where models do not. Retailers such as Chemist Warehouse and Toys R Us feed the same graph that makes the next client's agents work, and brands gain listings that machine buyers can actually read.
What's the impact: SEA commerce founders should buy or build the catalogue layer before competing on agent quality. Clean product attributes decide whether an agent can transact, and that asset stays owned when the underlying model changes.
- Who distributes the models in Malaysia? U Mobile makes OpenAI its anchor partner — TNGlobal
U Mobile signed OpenAI's first Malaysian telco partnership, applying its models across network operations, software development, cybersecurity and customer channels, with AWS supplying infrastructure. The carrier also names OpenAI anchor partner on its Enterprise Innovation Platform.
Positive-sum angle: Telcos hold the distribution that model vendors lack in the region: billing relationships, enterprise sales desks and a trusted brand in Bahasa Malaysia. Startups building on the platform reach mid-market buyers without hiring a Malaysian sales force.
What's the impact: Malaysian and Indonesian founders should treat carrier innovation platforms as a distribution channel, not a press release. Enterprise deals in KL still close through the telco account manager who already carries the customer's invoice.

Never miss a SEA deal.
