The model rent collapses; Asia owns the layers beneath.

Commodity intelligence focus · open inference · Asian rails

Tech Breakthroughs
- Chinese open models from DeepSeek and Z.ai reach US frontier parity — CNBC
US enterprises are moving workloads onto open-weight models from DeepSeek and Z.ai, now rated competitive with leading American systems, as OpenAI and Anthropic inference prices keep climbing.
Positive-sum angle: Open weights lift every builder downstream, not only the labs that ship them. When a frontier-grade model runs under a permissive licence, tooling makers, integrators, and self-hosters compound value on a shared substrate as the per-token tax falls toward zero.
What's the impact: SEA founders should reprice product roadmaps around commodity inference, not lab-tier API spend. Pilot open weights on regional cloud before Western pricing resets, and win on the Bahasa, Thai, and Vietnamese quality the base models still lack.
Emerging Industries
- Malaysia's Oppstar and Japan's Tokyo Artisan Intelligence validate an edge-AI chip — DigiTimes
The two firms completed validation of the Sting Ray reconfigurable AI chip and will produce samples on UMC's 40-nanometre process, with Oppstar leading design toward a first test chip in early 2027 for railway, robotics, and industrial use.
Positive-sum angle: Contract chip design deepens a regional capability, not one firm's order book. Every taped-out design at a Malaysian house builds local IP, tooling, and talent that later customers draw on, pulling more of the edge-silicon value chain into Southeast Asia.
What's the impact: Malaysian and Singaporean deep-tech founders should court Japanese and Korean fabless clients now, while design work migrates toward the Causeway. Build packaging, verification, and IP-design capacity before edge-AI order flow scales past 2027.
Open Source Projects
- DeepSeek open-sources DSpark, lifting V4 inference speed up to 85 percent — GitHub
Released under an MIT licence, the DeepSpec framework pairs a small draft model with the main model to verify tokens in batches, accelerating DeepSeek's production V4 models with no hardware upgrade or retraining.
Positive-sum angle: Open inference tooling compounds across the whole ecosystem. DeepSpec ships draft algorithms and training pipelines that also target the Qwen3 and Gemma families, so any team running open weights inherits the speed-up, lowering the real cost of serving intelligence for everyone downstream.
What's the impact: SEA operators self-hosting models on constrained GPU budgets should fold speculative decoding into serving stacks now. Reset capacity and unit-economics assumptions on inference, and hire for the systems-optimisation gap, not raw model training.
Business Models
- Indonesia opens a full-scale national carbon market with July trading — Ecobiz Asia
Under Presidential Regulation 110 of 2025, Indonesia's carbon market becomes fully operational, with IDX Carbon trading expected to begin in July and forestry corridors now linked to international buyers.
Positive-sum angle: A functioning exchange grows the whole climate-finance pie. Transparent price discovery gives project developers, verifiers, insurers, and downstream buyers a shared reference, pulling more capital toward Indonesian removals and lowering the cost of the next offtake across the region.
What's the impact: ASEAN climate founders and family offices should position registry, MRV, and trading-infrastructure plays around IDXCarbon before liquidity deepens. Build the verification and cross-border settlement rails now, while Jakarta is still wiring the market to international demand.

Never miss a SEA deal.
