Two of the three drugs that just extended survival in old mice have been in clinical use, for other conditions, for years.

The combination is called DMA. Dichloroacetate, metformin, and navitoclax at roughly a tenth of the dose used in earlier senolytic work. It came out of the Department of Bioengineering and the QB3 Institute at UC Berkeley, first author Zachery R. Robinson, corresponding author Irina M. Conboy, published in Aging on 17 July.

The mice were about 18 months old when dosing began, which is late middle age for a mouse, and the dosing was intermittent and long-term.

Average post-treatment survival went up by 102.6 days. That is 41.7 percent over controls. Treadmill endurance improved, and the animals did not get frailer or weaker while it happened.

The mechanism is the part worth your attention.

Cancer cells and senescent cells share a metabolic problem: damaged mitochondria and a rearranged energy supply. DMA leans on exactly that, draining ATP from cells that cannot compensate while healthy cells keep producing it. The senescent cell dies of an energy bill it cannot pay.

That is a different theory of the case from the one that has been failing in clinics. Most senolytic programmes have gone after the survival pathways directly, one agent at a time, and the results have kept landing short. This one goes after the shared metabolism instead, and the individual drugs did close to nothing on their own.

The dose is the finding. A tenth of the usual navitoclax did more inside the combination than the full dose of it alone.

Now the evidence grade, stated plainly, because everything above is easy to misread.

This is preclinical work in mice. It sits below every level on the human scale, including anecdote, because there is no human in it. The authors say so themselves: the in vivo effects are not fully explored, and more animal work in spontaneous cancer and age-related disease models is needed before anyone talks about clinical translation.

Navitoclax is not approved for human use at any dose. You are two full stages away from a result that means anything for your body.

What you can price today is the market around it. Chi Longevity in Singapore sells packages from SGD 4,250 to SGD 18,000. Hyperbaric oxygen runs SGD 250 to SGD 400 a session, red light around SGD 120, and the interventions with the strongest evidence behind them, training, food, sleep, vaccination, remain the cheap ones nobody builds a membership tier around.

That asymmetry is the story, and DMA sharpens it. Metformin has been generic for decades, and dichloroacetate is an old orphan compound.

The one component with any commercial life left in it is the one being used at a tenth dose.

So the cost of chasing this one privately is worth naming. You would be sourcing an unapproved combination on the strength of a mouse study, at doses nobody has established in humans, for a mechanism that has not been tested in a spontaneous-cancer model yet. There is no protocol to follow, because the protocol does not exist.

You would be the study, and the study would have one subject and no control.

The reasonable read is narrower and more useful. A result this clean, from a public university, on two compounds with no margin in them, is what unfunded progress looks like in this field, and it is the opposite shape from what gets sold in a consultation room on Orchard Road.

The Conboy lab’s next step is spontaneous cancer models. That is the number to wait for, and the shelf the metformin sits on will not have moved by then.1
