Britain lifted its sugar ration in September 1953, and household intake doubled from roughly 40 grams a day to roughly 80.

Chen Zhu at China Agricultural University and Weilong Zhang at Cambridge ran the comparison across 64,761 people born in Britain between 1951 and 1956, using UK Biobank records. Those whose first 1,000 days fell under the ration carried a hazard ratio of 0.31 for liver cancer, 0.48 for prostate, 0.59 for lung, 0.60 for rectal and 0.64 for breast. Their leukocyte telomeres ran 0.05 standard deviations longer, which the authors read as about 2.2 years of slower biological ageing.
That is the headline, and it is the less useful half of the paper.

GUSTO, Singapore’s birth cohort, recorded what its children drank. At 18 months, 13 percent of the 555 toddlers measured were taking no sugar-sweetened beverages at all. By age five, 98 percent of the children were drinking them.
Grade the evidence before you spend anything against it. A natural experiment is the strongest observational design on offer and still short of a trial, because nobody randomised a baby to a ration book. Telomere length remains a contested proxy for ageing, and every effect size here is population-level, which makes none of them a number about you.1
The design does have form. A 2024 paper in Science ran the same 1953 discontinuity and found early-life rationing cut type 2 diabetes risk by up to 35 percent and hypertension by as much as 20, delaying onset by four years and two. Protection showed up from in-utero exposure alone and deepened once solid food arrived.
So the honest accounting, at 40, with a supplement shelf.
Part of what that shelf is trying to move was set by a taste preference formed before you could read, and it does not reach back that far. The window is closed and the receipts keep coming.
What stays open is the beverage line. Singapore adults average twelve teaspoons of sugar a day, 58 grams, with more than half of it arriving in a cup. That national average sits between wartime rationing and the post-1953 doubling.
Nutri-Grade marks landed on packaged drinks in December 2022 and on freshly prepared ones a year later, aimed at adults whose thresholds were set decades before the sticker.
China ran the same curve later and steeper. Added sugar among children aged 3 to 17 climbed from 1.0 grams a day in 1997 to 7.2 by 2011, with urban children well ahead of rural ones.
The one number in this file you can still move is the one recorded after your second birthday, and it sits mostly in what you drink. A week of counting cups costs nothing and is the only audit here you can run on yourself.
