It sounds like a line about arrogant people. It is an inventory of your own.

Epictetus is not describing the loud man in the meeting. He is describing the quiet closing of a file — the moment a subject moves from open to settled in your head and stops taking in anything new.

The file closes without a sound.

Look at where yours are.

The pitch you have given two hundred times and no longer hear. Pricing, because you set it once and it worked. The part of the system you built yourself, so you skim that review instead of reading it.

Every one of those you would list, without hesitation, as a strength.

That is the cost of the sentence. Your strengths are the places you stopped learning, because competence feels like completion, and completion feels like nothing at all. Weakness at least announces itself — you feel the friction, you go and read. A settled subject sends no signal.

So the parts of your work worst positioned for the next two years are not the ones you find hard. They are the ones you find easy.

Test it this morning. Take the thing you would name first if someone asked what you are good at, and ask a question about it you would be embarrassed to ask out loud — why the price is that number, who the customer actually is, what the system does when the third call fails.

If you have an answer, it cost you five minutes.

If you don't, you just found the file that has been closed the longest.
