First Light

Ambition means tying your well-being to what other people say or do. Self-indulgence means tying it to the things that happen to you. Sanity means tying it to your own actions.

Marcus Aurelius

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

Two of the three, you have been praised for.

Marcus is not sorting vices here. He is asking one question three times: when today gets scored, who holds the pen? The answer, twice out of three, is not you.

Ambition hands the pen to a room. The reply that has not come, the promotion round that closes in November, the post you open again at 11pm to see whether it landed. Real work goes into all of it, and none of it is settled by you.

That is the one on your appraisal form.

Self-indulgence hands the pen to weather. A cancelled meeting, a bad number, rain at the wrong hour, and the day is gone by ten. Nobody praises this one, but it bills the same hours.

Sanity, in his account, is not calm. It is the narrow set of things that finish whether or not anyone answers.

That column is short and unglamorous. The draft closed. The number checked twice, the forty minutes spent on the thing nobody has asked for yet.

The test takes a minute to run and stings to fail. Take today's list and mark every item that closes without another person's yes. On most lists the mark lands on one or two lines, and they are rarely the lines at the top.

So: do one of those before you check whether yesterday's landed. Not because the reply does not matter. Because a day spent waiting on it is a day someone else already spent.
