First Light

Exercise is the most potent longevity drug.

Peter Attia

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

The load-bearing word is drug. He chose it because nobody skips a drug that works.

A real drug arrives with a box, a dose, a schedule, and someone at the next appointment asking whether you took it. This one arrives with none of that. Nobody calls to check that you did the hour.

So it gets filed as optional, which is only ever a longer word for last.

The reason is not laziness. It is the payout date — you model runway in quarters and hiring in weeks, while the return on this morning's session lands in a decade you have not met yet, paid to a person you have not become.

Attia's answer is to run the plan backwards. Name what you want to be able to do at eighty-five: carry a grandchild up a flight of stairs, get off the floor without using your hands, walk the length of a hawker centre carpark in the afternoon heat. Then ask what this decade has to look like for those to still be on the table.

Strength at eighty is not maintained. It is prepaid.

So today: write down one thing you intend to still be doing at eighty. One line, on paper, where you will see it. Then do the single session that pays into it — before the inbox has a claim on the morning.

The dose is dull, undated, and the only one that pays out in decades.
