First Light

We are living progressively sheltered, sterile, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged, safety-netted lives.

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

The list is not a complaint. It is an inventory of things that were solved.

Every item on it was a victory. Someone engineered the temperature-controlled part. Someone built the sheltered walkway that runs from the MRT gantry to the office lift lobby, so that a man can cross a tropical island in August and arrive dry.

Nobody in the history of this country ever stood up and argued for the covered linkway to be removed.

That is what makes the line so hard to act on. You cannot be against any single item on it and still be sane. Sterile is good. Safety nets are good. Being fed is the oldest ambition there is.

But read the one word in that list that does not behave like the others. Underchallenged.

The rest describe things done for you. That one describes a vacancy — the space where difficulty used to sit, unasked for, arriving whether or not you had the character to want it.

Your grandmother did not have discipline about walking. She had distance, and no car.

So the arithmetic changed without an announcement. Hardship used to arrive free; now it has to be bought, scheduled, and defended against a calendar that will take the slot back the moment you look away. Comfort did not remove the need for difficulty. It removed the delivery.

Which is why willpower feels so expensive now. It is doing a job the environment used to do for nothing, and it is doing it alone.

So today: take one thing that was solved for you and unsolve it for an hour — the escalator, the delivery order, the twenty-four degrees, the taxi for the two stops you could walk.

Not as penance, and not to prove anything to anyone.

Because a life with nothing left in it to endure is not a finished life. It is an unused one.
