First Light

Don't follow your passion; rather, let it follow you in your quest to become so good that they can't ignore you.

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

The line gets read as permission to be cynical about work. It is a claim about direction.

Passion, in this telling, is not fuel. It is exhaust. It arrives after the competence, not before it — which is inconvenient, because everyone wants to feel certain before they start, and certainty is the one thing a beginning never issues.

Watch what the advice actually forbids. It forbids the search. The job changed every eighteen months for the one that finally clicks. The deck rewritten a fourth time because the idea doesn't yet feel like destiny. Searching feels like progress. It is the most sophisticated way to not start.

The uncle who has run the same stall for thirty years was never asked whether he found his passion. He got good. Then he got rare. Then people queued, and somewhere in the queue the work became the thing he loved — not because he chose right at twenty-two, but because being undeniable at one thing beats being curious about ten.

So the question this morning is not what you love. It is what you are measurably better at than you were in January. If the honest answer is nothing — if this year's skills are last year's skills — then the feeling you are waiting on has no route to you.

Ninety minutes today on the craft, not the search. Passion is not the map. It is the view from further up.
