First Light

Exercise is the most potent longevity drug we have.

Peter Attia
CÈ · First light

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

Attia chose the word drug on purpose. A drug is not optional.

If a doctor handed you a pill that added years — not vague years, but years where you could still climb the stairs, lift a grandchild, carry your own bags — you would not miss a dose. You would set an alarm. Attia's sentence says you already hold that prescription. It is called a walk, a flight of stairs, an hour with something heavy. And you skip it the way you would never skip medicine.

Notice how it hides. The workout postponed until after this deadline. The lift taken instead of four flights because the meeting starts in six minutes. The Saturday that fills with errands until the light is gone. None of these felt like a decision about the last decade of your life. Every one of them was.

The tai chi aunties in the void deck at six in the morning are not more disciplined than you. They have simply stopped negotiating. The movement is not something they decide each day; it happened before the deciding self woke up. That is the whole trick — you do not win the argument with the couch, you retire it.

So today, before the errands, before the inbox: thirty minutes with your heart rate up. Not because you will feel it tomorrow. Because you will feel it in thirty years.
