First Light

Envy is a map you are too proud to read. It points, with embarrassing accuracy, at the life you actually want.

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

The feeling gets filed under sins. File it under data instead.

Most advice tells you to kill it — gratitude list, log off, count your blessings. Useful, maybe, for the sting. Useless for the signal. Because the pang is not random. It does not fire for everyone's win. You scroll past a hundred announcements and feel nothing, then one — the classmate who finally shipped the company, the colleague a rung above, the friend who moved abroad and somehow looks lighter for it — lands like a small electric shock. That precision is the whole message.

Run it the other way and it gets sharper. Notice what you don't envy. The person earning twice your salary in a job you would hate. The founder whose calendar you would never trade for. No pang there — which means that, whatever you tell yourself you want, your body has already cast a quieter vote. Envy is honest in a way ambition is not. Ambition can be borrowed from a podcast. Envy you cannot fake.

The JC class chat is the cruelest version and the most useful. Fifteen years of the same fifty people, each one a slightly different fork of a life you could have taken. The reunion dinner where someone mentions a thing offhand and you still feel it in your chest on the drive home. That flinch is not pettiness. It is a door you walked past and have been calling a wall.

So today, before the week reclaims you: name the one person whose specific win made you flinch this month — not the vague success, the exact thing. The book, the move, the number, the freedom. Write it down in plain words. That sentence is your next year, already addressed to you. You only have to stop being too proud to open it.
