First Light

The obstacle is the way.

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

Weeks lived
Weeks remaining
Life spent

The line is famous enough to feel like a poster. It is a procedure.

Most people treat obstacles as interruptions — the thing that got in the way of the real work. The hire who quit mid-sprint. The vendor who missed the deadline. The regulation that arrived the week before launch. The reflex is to route around them, to get back to the plan as written. That is the misread. Holiday is not offering consolation. He is naming what the work actually is.

The MRT breaks down on the morning of your client meeting. You can spend the ride fuming about SBS Transit, or you can use the extra fifteen minutes in the Grab to rehearse the pitch out loud. The obstacle did not block the preparation. It became the preparation. The question is not whether the thing in your way is annoying. The question is whether you will let it stay empty or make it load-bearing.

Run the last month. How many of the disruptions — the delayed approval, the scope creep, the bug that surfaced in staging — could have sharpened the work instead of just delaying it? Most of them. The constraint that forced you to cut three slides made the deck better. The technical limitation that killed your first approach led to the simpler one you should have started with.

So today: take the thing blocking your progress and name one way it makes the next version better. Not because obstacles are gifts. Because the only path forward is through the thing already in it.
