First Light

The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.

Marcus Aurelius

Your life, one week at a time

Each dot is a single week. The Stoics kept death in view not to despair, but to spend the squares that remain.

The line sounds inspirational. It is structural.

The project that just got harder, the approval that came back with five new conditions, the vendor who ghosted after three follow-ups — none of these feel like opportunities. They feel like friction. But Aurelius is not talking about reframing. He is talking about what actually builds capacity. The smooth path teaches you nothing except how to stay on smooth paths.

Walk through Tanjong Pagar at lunch. Every co-working space, every funded startup, every renovated shophouse office — they all carry the same polished story about product-market fit and growth curves. What you don't see: the six months when the product didn't work, the co-founder fight that nearly killed the company, the cash runway that ran to eleven days. Those were not detours. Those were the entire curriculum.

The error is thinking obstacles delay the real work. The obstacle is the real work. The project that forces you to rebuild the workflow is teaching you the only workflow that scales. The client who keeps changing scope is showing you where your boundaries aren't clear. The hire who didn't work out is the reason you will write a better job description next time.

So today: pick the thing that is currently stuck. Not the easy task you have been using to avoid it. The one that has been blocked for two weeks. Spend one hour on it — not solving it, just naming exactly why it is stuck and what the next smallest move is.

Because the path you are avoiding is the only one that goes anywhere.
